A Chinatown Walgreens has a bit of egg on its face after a sale on eggs
caused a bit of a riot Tuesday morning, according to a witness at the scene.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning about 8 a.m. in front of the Walgreens
in the 1300 block of Stockton Street, according to John Murnin, who lives
across the street.

Apparently Walgreens was offering a sale on eggs, 99 cents for a dozen eggs,
and the sale was so successful they almost ran out and customers reportedly
fought for what little was left.

That didn't sit too well with what Murnin said was hundreds of elderly women
who wanted to get their hands on a dozen.

"They were fighting - fist fighting - over eggs," he said. Police were
called out to the scene to break up the fighting, but the women wouldn't
leave.

"I've never seen anything like it," Murnin said, "all these 50-, 60-, 80-
year-old women fighting over eggs."

An officer at Central Station confirmed police went out there but there was
no police report filed and no one injured.

"The whole thing seems a bit overblown," she said.

Police Officer Gordon Shyy said that when police arrived, there were about
20 people that were fighting over the remaining discounted eggs.

The crowd dispersed without further incident, Shyy said.

The manager at the Walgreens declined to comment on the incident.

Fortunately, the story had a happy ending, when about three or four hours
later a truck load of eggs was brought to the store, Murnin said.

However, Murnin thought Walgreens could have handled the situation better.

"Walgreens really screwed it up," Murnin said. "Putting on a sale in a poor
neighborhood and not having enough eggs for the poor people that came for
them."

Murnin, who attempted to mediate the situation with Walgreens management,
was later rewarded with a dozen eggs for free, he said.

"To shut me up," he said.
